Heart of the Biolab

We get back to the ship, and find the kids dressed and excited to go. There's so much going on, I almost walk back out the door.

Alix pulls me to him. "I know the noise and all the chaos is overwhelming at times, but if I can learn to deal with it with my issues, you can too." He grabs my hand.

I smile at him. "I suppose I need to get used to it, if we're going to be spending lots of quality time with these kids." Did I just say that out loud? I feel my face getting warm, and try to squirm away, but Alix keeps me close.

His eyes darken to an emerald green and his mouth quirks up one side. He turns me so we're facing each other and kisses me. I close my eyes and return the kiss, melting into his embrace. The noise around us fades into the background as I'm lost in Alix's warmth.

I open my eyes as we separate slightly. I look up into his face and smile. "You're all right with this?" I tip my head to the side.

His arms tighten around me and he gives me one of those smiles that sends shivers down my spine. "Yes." His voice is still husky with emotion.

Something to our side catches our attention, and I instinctively try to drop my arms and step back. But Alix grabs my hand again and doesn't let me get too far away.

Aron appears next to us shaking his head. He's holding the little girl with the large brown eyes. "We're all ready."

I smile. "Good." I wonder how much he saw.

Alix and I head out of the bay, still holding hands. We lead the line of energetic kids past the guards in the bay, and down the hallway to the large cargo elevator. Aron takes the first group up. It takes several trips to get everyone to the top floor. Alix and I take the last trip up with a few of the older kids.

We come out of the elevator and find it strangely quiet. I look frantically around thinking something's wrong. But then I notice that both kids and adults alike are looking around in amazement. Little mouths are wide open as they crane their necks to look up at the birds soaring through the trees. Small fingers are gently touching the colorful flowers all around.

Alix and I wind our way through the maze of kids to stand next to Aron.

"Elaine should be here soon. She's very good at teaching about all the growing things here, and how to take care of the environment." I point behind us where Elaine and three other people are walking toward us. "Looks like she's brought reinforcements."

Alix, Aron, and I move to the back of the crowd and allow Elaine and her helpers to talk to the children. They're enthralled with every word she says. I think how sad it is that these kids have never seen a live animal or even a plant.
